With the new release of Ubuntu 8.10, I finally am making the time to upgrade my wife’s machine from 7.10. However, I have learned from the past and not done this one “big bang” but rather via having a new hard drive (actually reconditioned) ready and installed Ibex on that.
Here is my list of tips, tricks, notes and general stuff about getting the 8.10 machine to operate just right…
- To get the LAMP stuff up and running, just use the command
sudo tasksel install lamp-server.
- To get rid of the “Unable to determine fully qualified domain name” in Apache, put a file called
/etc/apache2with nothing but the line
ServerName [whatever your server is...without these brackets]
- Comment out the bind-address 127.0.0.1 in /etc/mysql/my.cnf so that you can access MySQL from any machine. Also, log in to MySQL as root (i.e. mysql -u root -p), use mysql and then update user set host = ‘%’ where host = ‘[machine name]’ and user = ‘root’ so you can admin from other machines too.
